So I had a sick day today and while resting up I decided it would be fun to paint up some Tau. I spent pretty well all day on my Shadowsun conversion. It took a bit to get her right and I ended up changing tacks so it was more of a punk rocker girl feel. I got some more freehand practice in there and really like the angler fish look. Fits the fishy theme of the army and the girlier but deadly look I wanted.

The bases needs to be finished but that's a multiday affair and my lighter grey is dried out so I have to wait until this weekend to pick up a new pot.

Now I kind of wish I have tomorrow off so I can paint up my red suit! Or that I actually use shadowsun....

So the Daemon project is coming along. I'm starting out with the slaaneshi contingent because they require the most work and Alicia used to play them so if I do convince her to come out she can use those models along with hers. So I've adopted her "mardi gras" colour theme of green, purple and yellow with a bit of pink. Not something I would normally choose but I am trying to get better at painting with this army so I took it as a challenge.

I spent like a day just properly basing the army. I magnetized the metal screamers which was a pain and put in slots for the cavalry slots the flesh hounds required. I made some large flying bases too out of some spare plastic at the shop for the chariots which came out really nice. I'm waiting until after christmas before I finish those to use some of the christmas money to buy some steeds of slaanesh for the chariots.

Head cannon for the army is basically a grey seer finds a ton of warpstone, steals a space marines bike and power armour and just opens up warp rifts to summon daemons. A big goal for this list is to get the big 4s greater daemons, a verminlord and a greater daemon of Malal at some point. Pretty excited to take an old grey seer add wings and make him a daemon prince.

3rd Party Daemon Prince I got as a gift. May need to address the flame later.

Getting pretty excited about this project. It will be really nice once I get one of each of the oder metal greater daemons done. I just remember loving those models as a kid.

New year new pics of my armies. Last year I took pictures of my white scars and Tau collections. I had tabletop ready and fully finished shots. Tau is by far my main and largest army so I decided to bust them out last week to take a picture. That way I could appreciate my army in its full since normally they are in an army case and to catalog my results. I came out pretty darn happy with the results. I have plenty of fire warriors done up!

Again here we are at the start of 2018

And this was so many models I had a hard time fitting it in and making it look nice without the angle.

I hit most of my painting and modeling goals for this army while adding in extra models like the ghostkeel, 3 firesight marksman, mecha stormsurge, shadowsuna and the new cold star commander. Plus a lot of models were moved to tabletop ready status so finishing them is a lot easier. I would really like to add some bigger suits like more ghostkeels or maybe a riptide. Mainly though I want to bring everything in that tabletop ready camp over the finish line. I think this year I could have all those guys done up. I'm driven to paint the models I will use so I think maybe I need to insert or build lists around unpainted models. Although I may get distracted by team canada or the daemons so who knows.

It was pretty rewarding doing this just seeing the army out and then being able to compare. Imagine what the 2019-2020 pictures will look like.

I've been sprucing up some models for the narrative event coming up. I've finished my cold star commander, drones and all my firesight marksmans cammo cloaks. I just have one final thing to finish up and my list as is should be ready for the event. It will be nice to be ready ahead of time for once rather then painting at the last minute lol.

Really happy with how the cold star commander came out. It was nice to deviate from the usual colour scheme and paint the guy up in the farsight enclave colours. Since he is kind of the red baron in my army and I've always thought of farsight as more of a ronin I went with a japanese theme. The kanji on his chest should say Baron and on his fusion blasters fire. The other commanders guns will say blood in tau for a good GOT reference. The dragons came out really nice and crisp. I wasn't brave enough to do wet blending on them and make them more coloured. When I get back to demons that is what I plan on working on.

The best part of being done with the cammo cloaks is I can finally stop saying their extra cover bonus will make more sense when the cammo cloaks are painted lol. Really happy with how these guys turned out. It's just a nice model with the base size and rock weight for the basing to play with. They look cool as a trio as well. Considering they are a staple of my army I'm happy I've spent the extra time.

So I am starting up my very own hive fleet. I am really hoping to be able to try out a bunch of new stuff both modeling and painting wise with these guys. Nice bases, weathering, freehand, weathering and try my hand at some non-metallic metal. Hopefully I'll be able to take a big step forward in my hobby game with this army. On that path I have convertwed up my flying hive tyrant and I am pretty pleased with the result. I still have to figure out how I am going to do the basing.

A lot of work is going into team Canada lately. They are getting rather close to having my initial vision for what I wanted completed. Mostly it is a lot of boring stuff like making batchees of 40 bases and oodles of shoulder pads that I was too nervous to have on the models initially when I was having initial production difficulties.

That said I did finish my Inceptors. I decided the Gravis guys made good goalies so I had my college roommate who was our goalie determine which would be the first goalies. He insisted Gerry Cheevers be one and I had to do the stitches on his mask. It was tough but I am happy with the way it came out.

So I have two more months left in this year and Team Canada is close to being as done as an army ever is before I decide to add a piece or two. So I have decided to set some end of year goals to clear the deck so that next year will be the year of the nids for me. I feel like I have been a bit spastic almost finishing units and then just stopping short so I really would like to close out those projects.

November Goals
Finish Smash Biker Captain - 80% Complete
Finish Librarian - 90% Complete
Finish Jump Smash Captain - 25% Complete
Finish Van Vets - 80% Complete
Make a Display Board that Looks like a Rink - 5%

December Goals
Finish 2 Riptides - 90% Complete
Base Remaning Army - 10% Complete
Finish Remaining Shoulder Pads - 5% Complete

Stretch Goals
Finish Repulsor Executioner Turret STL Files - 20% Complete
Print Repulsor Executioner Turret -

If I can get that done or mostly done by the end of the year I think I will really have met my painting goals for this year. It is pretty cool to see whole carrying cases with fully finished models.

So after finishing up team canada for the games day I've decided to take a brief bunch of random painting to experiment with some new techniques. So I painted up my gravis captain for my brother as part of his christmas gift. A Good bit of modeling went into it and some green stuff work that I have been getting a lot happier with. The zenithal shading and glazing was a little odd considering death company come in almost straight black. So I'm not sure how much it did or if it was the best first choice. Still I think there is something added to it. Although I could just be fooling myself.

Also I couldn't find a cool blood angels thing to freehand so I decided to do the team gurren logo. Alicia shook her head at me but when she saw the final result was one of those I hate that this works so well it validates your ridiculous choice. I am particularly proud of the skull on the shoulder I sculpted. It's not perfect by any means but it doesn't look like garbage either so the time and effort on sculpting is starting to pay off!

Hilariously the cat tree seemed to have really nice diffuse light by it.

Alright so the year of the tyranids is starting out strong. I've gotten a game in already with them and I'll get my first full 2k point game in this Sunday.

So of note over christmas my brother and I talked about collaborating on a display board. He will do the primaris marines and I will do the tyranids. The plan is to have 1000 points done and the display board painted up for February when there is a GT out in where we grew up in Rochester NY. So a nice road trip stay at our folks place and hopefully win best painted for the doubles Friday event. Saturday and Sunday would be singles so it should be a busy but very nice event. He wants to experiment with colour shifting opalescent paints. I want some vibrant colours so our working theme atm is psychadelic swamp

To kick it off I started with the broodlord model I had. As I said I wanted best painted/hobby and I want to work on my sculpting so I decided to move the broodlord onto an unfortunate reiver I had traded for. I think he came out rather well and definitely looks like a conversion. I have gotten scored 0 for conversions with my Tau before because the conversions looked too clean. So I kind of want it to be obvious that some work has been done to the models

With all the spiky bits on tyranids I didn't think foam transport would be economical for the big monsters. The Toxicrenes will be a nightmare. So I have decided to do some magnetic transportation. The problem is though that stuff is expensive and I need money for models to get myself up to a comfortable 2k list. So I put some thought into it and decided to reuse one of my army transport bags. I rummaged around the shop at work found some spare Aluminum framing and perforated steel and I machined the transport.

It works well and I am fairly pleased with it. The capacity is not huge because I inset the steel as I was worried about it cutting when getting pulled out if I set it on top. I will probably revisit and tweak this later. Mechanically though the tops of the trays have screw heads which act as pins that have slots cut out onto the bottom of the trays. So even during transportation if anything shifts the pins will prevent the tray falling down crushing the models below. Probably going to need to make a second one of these but for a first go prototype it went great and I was able to finish it all staying late one night after work! Finally my winged Hive Tyrant can ride safely in style!

Also I have my second Mawlock/Trygon down there that I got from Spencer at the gift exchange. Really happy with how he came out. I will add pictures of him properly to another post later.

I picked up a Toxicrene and a Maleceptor. The maleceptor is done and was a really fun conversion. I am pretty happy with the way all my sculpting came out on him. He seems kind of longer and leaner which is a cool look IMO. Pretty pleased with the sculpting around the neck area as that represents a pretty big improvement for me. He certainly wasn't the easiest model to put my own spin on based off of how the model is assemble. I think he will stand out though.

Maleceptor

Image

Toxicrene needs a little bit of cleaning up. The tail needs smoothing and maybe a bit more refinement and the unfortunate reaver needs some arms and to sort of be fighting for his life. I changed the tentacles so that they are attacking the reaver. Looks cool and also squishes the model a bit which makes hopefully way easier to transport. The base model likes to spread out. Like I couldn't fit two on a tray. This gets a cool look nice conversion points ideally and I made sure he could fit in my transport. I bent the tentacles by dipping them in a pot of boiling water. Seemed to work our really well. Hot enough to be able to bend not hot enough to melt or shrink via degassing. I did get overzealous on one tentacle which broke. So I cut off the barb used a some wire and some grey stuff to make the tentacle wrap around the reaver.

On a side note boy am I burning through armature wire and grey stuff on this project. The maleceptor is a hefty bug. On the plus side I dropped him on the floor and he is still one piece so yay for sturdiness?

Toxicrene WIP

So the current larger scale models are getting finished to a level I am happy with. Currently I just have one more order probably 2 more toxicrenes and my ripper swarms to complete. I decided to buy the plastic swarms off of ebay. I want them to be killing and swarming over primaris marines so there is construction to be done there too. After that though the army is set minus a change or two for the doubles tourney.

However I need to get to basing and painting my models. I have decided to start playing around with colours on the tyranids themselves first and then determining what the bases will be. I am pretty drawn to purple scales since purple is a colour I have less experience painting. I also know I want to do some scale effects. There's a pretty cool feathered edge highlight but that limits my ability to add freehand to these models. I am also not dure how well that works with glazing and doing a zenithal shading.

So mainly these are the colours I am looking at. I think the yellow and purple come off looking strong. The green skin may be too blah to read on the table. A pale green may be a better choice. More experimentation to follow. I am meeting up with my brother in a couple weekends and we are going to figure out the colour scheme for his primaris and my nid army. Which is the reason my guys are killing primaris dudes cause we want to do a combined display board for a doubles tournament in November.
