Salamanders and a Very Stompy Boi

Postby The Last Acton Hero » Thu Aug 16, 2018 12:20 pm

Hey everybody! I haven't had a chance to play much this summer (thanks to the Army as usual). That said I've got a new 2k list I'm thinking about. As most of you know my usual list is razorback/predator spam to present a wall of t7 3+ vehicles, with some plasma and Thunder Hammers to back it up. This is the same idea, but with a Ion-Troll Knight Gallant to stomp all those pesky melee armies.

Salamander Battalion

Captain with thunder hammer and MC Boltgun (storm of fire)
LT with thunder hammer and MC Boltgun (armor indomitus)

4x Razorbacks with Assault Cannons and Storm Bolters
4x Tactical marines (5 man) with Plas/Combi-plas

Salamander Spearhead

Techmarine with Conversion Beamer

3x Predators, Predator Autocannons, Las Sponsons, HK missiles

Super Heavy Auxiliary Detachment

Knight Gallant (Ion Bulwark, Sanctuary)

(8 Drops)

Spend 2 (of 9 total) CP to give the Knight Ion Bulwark WL trait and Sanctuary Relic, so now he has a 4++ in every phase (boosted to 3++ with rotate ion shields stratagem as necessary). He's now stupid resilient and gets 5 WS2+ attacks, or 15 stomps.

Tactics

VS a Gunline: Send the 4 razorbacks and knight racing forward to force the issue and draw fire while the predators use killshot.

VS an Assault army: Castle for turns 1-2 to weather the storm, then use fast-ish vehicles to grab objectives turn 3-5.

VS Elite army: Absolute murder brawl relying on high total wound count to come out on top.

Thoughts?

As one that has played knights + Admech, I have some thoughts about the knight.

1) PARAGON GAUNTLET! IMO, you do not, not give him that gauntlet! Yes, a little less tanky, but the point of the melee knight is to punch, and you should maximize that. Full Melee can get you to about 6-7 base attacks with a paragon gauntlet (no -1 to hit, Sx2 AP-4 8 damage with chance of more mortal wounds)
2) You can get household traits, even if you have a Super-Heavy-Aux. So Raven for more melee, or hawkshroud to keep the knight hitting at full force (you have to get down to 7 wounds remaining before you notice any degradation with hawkshroud)
3) If you do decide with using hawkshroud, don't knock the 2CP stratagem. basically "For the Greater Good" for a knight and then heroic intervention up to 2D6"

Good points, the best part about the knight WL trait/relic stratagems is you use them right before the battle so you can adjust to the situation at hand. I thought it said you don't get household traits with Superheavy Auxiliary Detachment, did that change?

Just a minor point. If you ever plan on tournament-ing, WL Traits & Relic Strats are fixed beforehand. Anyways carry on!

Ahhh, just realized sanctuary and ion bullwark don't stack. The best you can get is a 4++ against shooting, 5++ against melee (each is boostable with rotate ion shields). Bullwark is still awesome, but probably would go for the Paragon gauntlet over Sanctuary. 2+ save is kinda tempting too, but who shoots low AP weapons at a knight?

think of it this way, the stompy knight can never truly be locked in combat, and is a nice juicy target for something to shoot at that isn't a predator(s).
