TAC Salamanders

Postby Sandtiger » Tue May 22, 2018 1:22 pm

So this list is a lot of fun and I will likely be refining small bits of it and adding on to it but it works well for a TAC Salamanders list. I will be playing this or some variation thereof pretty steadily in the next month or two.

++ Vanguard Detachment +1CP (Imperium - Space Marines) [30 PL, 536pts] ++

+ No Force Org Slot +

**Chapter Selection**: Salamanders

+ HQ +

Chaplain in Terminator Armor [7 PL, 102pts]: Storm bolter

+ Elites +

Cataphractii Terminator Squad [12 PL, 210pts]
. Cataphractii Sergeant: Lightning Claw (Pair)
. Cataphractii Terminator: Lightning Claw (Pair)
. Cataphractii Terminator: Lightning Claw (Pair)
. Cataphractii Terminator: Lightning Claw (Pair)
. Cataphractii Terminator: Lightning Claw (Pair)

Company Champion [3 PL, 54pts]: Combat shield, Master-crafted power sword, The Shield Eternal

Vanguard Veteran Squad [8 PL, 170pts]: Jump Pack
. Space Marine Veteran: Lightning Claw, Storm shield
. Space Marine Veteran: Lightning Claw, Storm shield
. Space Marine Veteran: Lightning Claw, Storm shield
. Space Marine Veteran: Lightning Claw, Storm shield
. Veteran Sergeant: Plasma pistol, Relic blade

++ Total: [110 PL, 2000pts] ++

The biggest thing that needs to be replaced is the Cataphractii Terminators since they are very pricey. However, they work great at doing their job when they actually get into combat, so I am definitely not unhappy with their effectiveness; they just need to be cheaper. I'm thinking another Vanguard Veteran squad or a Sternguard squad might take their place.

Favorite units so far are the Stormtalons, Vanguard Vets, and Company Champion. Vets and Champion are so nice to pair together to wipe something out, and Company Champion's master-crafted power sword makes him threatening to Terminators, Bikers, and anything else with 2 wounds apiece so he's never felt like a wasted unit.

There are a couple small things missing that I think pretty much every marine list (ESPECIALLY salamanders) should be running, namely one designated dude with a Heavy Bolter to shoot a Hellfire round, and one designated dude (or washing machine) with a missile launcher to shoot a Flakk Missile. Those are probably the two most solid stratagems Marines have in their book especially when as salamanders it's super easy to get yourself shooting the single shot at a re-rollable 2+ to hit. Take a single heavy bolter in your lascannon devastator squad (and use the sergeants scanner thingy to give him BS2+) and then just slap a missile launcher pretty much anywhere because flakk missile gets a +1 to hit naturally. A lascannon/missile launcher vendread is probably the safest bet for a caddy to carry that if you can find the points for one - salamander shooty dreads are the bees knees with that chapter tactic.

Finding the points to add those hurricane bolters to your stormtalon is usually a good idea. Space Marines naturally struggle against hordes, but stormtalons help with that massively, thanks to their ability to park right in front of enemy units that want to move up (forcing them to go around his big fat base) and thanks to the fact that they take those hurricane bolters and shoot like a full tactical squad in double tap range with none of the risk.

In general, I think there's room to be more gutsy with a list like this. You've got that dedicated Dreadnought transport slot in the Stormtalon that I'm amazed nobody seems to use (Salamander multi-melta vendread is the absolute business when you can get him into close range) you've got great buffs if you can mix assault and combat out of the lieutenant and the captain, and all the guns that seem like they'd work the best with your chapter tactic are closer ranged.

Scott you're thinking of the Stormraven not the Stormtalon. Stormtalon is the small gunship, with T6 and 10 wounds, Stormraven is the large one with T7 and 14 wounds and the ability to take Hurricane Bolters and a Dreadnought. If I get a Stormraven I will take your advice on the dreadnoughts though.

Heavy Bolter Dude will have to be made, I do have 2 Missile Launcher dudes that I can throw into a Devastator Squad though so good call on that.

Coming as a tank man here. If you want to help the melee units get into position to go choppy-choppy, you could invest in a Land Raider Crusader. with the transport rules as they are now. You can drop a stormtalon, jump packs on van-vets, and try to squeeze some more points to fit it. Now you have a 16 capacity tank, that can take up 3 drops (4 if you stick the lieutenant in there and pop him out T1). If you really, really want to be adventurous, a Land Raider Excelsior (HQ Command Tank) only has a 10 man capacity, but does come with a 5++ and a Captain aura for more re-rolls.

I mean, simplest thing to do would be swap one lascannon for a missile launcher. In the instance where there's absolutely nothing with Fly on the board...bad luck, you've got an 18% less efficient lascannon for the same points. When you have something with fly, great, you're getting the most efficient CP use marines have got (1cp for +1 to hit, D3 extra mortal wounds on a missile launcher shot).

IMO drop the pistols from your sgts and drop a couple bodies from a tac squad or to to afford combi plasma on all the sgts. Its kinda silly not to bother taking it. Also on your van vets with the claws? Why not invest in a hammer for the sgt? Make the most use out of that chapter tactic.

One of my next purchases is going to be another VanVets squad with all Thunder Hammers. I wanted the first VanVets squad to just be a bunch of guys who could sweep up tender morsels of small infantry squads and wouldn't die at the drop of a hat.
