The Leviathan Dread is not a character...

...but with T8 14W and 4++ (yes, 4+ invuln) it might as well be. Things are scaaaaaary.

You raise a very interesting point, Scott, about how so often this game comes down to the arms-race of shenanigans (shenaniganery?) rather than more straightforward tactics. I think we've all been guilty of that in some way shape or form and 7th edition certainly did nothing to curb such bad habits. Personally, I think the issue has a lot to do with Soup in general. A shenanigan can be just that--a shenanigan--when it's used in a mono-faction build . Some armies are fairly weak, so their shenanigans are the "only" option they have to be competitive. But then the nature of being able to go Soup in an army (sorry, FLG, but "soup" does not mean in the same detachment, it means in the same army) means that that one shenanigan from army X that is all it really has can then be abused by army Y that already is super powerful, thus leading to a disproportionate amount of abuse, resulting in the nerf bat...which in turn makes army X even weaker and army Y just as powerful.

And of course one can't say shenanigans this much without referencing these "wee lil' shenanigans:" https://youtu.be/JNPW2wZ4D2s
True, but I disagree that the recent "soup nerf" did nothing to curb ally shenanigans in competitive play. In combination with the limit to three detachments, I saw a WHOLE lot less soup when I did my big meta-analysis of all those lists.

For example, take marine lists: of 20 space marine detachments fielded in the tournament, 18 of them were single-subfaction mono-marines.11 Ultramarines, 1 Imp Fist, 1 Crimson Fist (running as imp fist obviously), 2 Salamander, 3 Raven Guard. Pretty good spread. Ynnari basically disappeared, and in their absence, mono-drukhari and mono-craftworld took their place. Nids despite having access to Imperial Guard if they went 1 detachment nids, 1 detachment GSC, 1 detachment guard, only chose to do so in 3 out of 20-ish lists, the rest all went mono-nids.

The big exceptions were Imperial Guard/Custodes, who were vast majority soup armies, and Chaos, which featured a ton of heretic astartes/daemon mixes of various flavors. I don't think Soup is going to go un-nerfed in the future, but I also don't think the latest nerf did nothing at all, it certainly changed the ball game.

Scott do you want to do codex deathwatch discussion here or should I keep the clutter out of your list thread?

My honest initial reaction is to be super excited about specialist ammunition, bikers that are really good with said special ammunition, and Terminator squads that can take up to 3 heavy weapons lmao.... 3 missile launchers in a squad of Terminators is damn good.

Not as excited about the Corvus Blackstar, but eh. I guess we just treat the Corvid launcher missiles as additional bolter shots. I hate the entire idea of missiles that do 1 damage but whatever.
