Sunday 2/25: Space Wolves Vs Thousand Sons Showdown!

Postby MrScotty » Mon Mar 05, 2018 9:40 am

Tomas and I had a great Space Wolves v Thousand Sons throwdown a couple weeks ago, and got some great pictures about it, so I figured I would do a writeup for it.

For the mission, we decided to set our battle before the invasion of Fenris in the recent campaign book. The Thousand Sons have landed a small strike force on Fenris with the purpose of opening up a warp rift wide enough for the primarch Magnus to come through and spearhead the invasion of the system. The space wolves, for their part, have assembled a conclave of Fenris' mightiest Rune Priests to summon up a mighty storm to sweep the invaders off the face of the planet.

We played the new Eternal War mission which featured 6 objectives. Holding an objective at the end of a player's turn was worth 1 point, and if you held an objective in your opponent's deployment zone, you had the option to destroy it to gain D3 points instead. The Thousand Sons had 3 fiery warp portals in their deployment, and the Space Wolves had 3 stormy vortexes.

The Thousand Sons list was an elite kabal of sorcerors backed up by a daemonic incursion. Ahriman, returning from exile, led a force to bring his primarch's wrath to their most hated foes. he was accompanied by an Exalted Sorceror, two squads of Scarab Occult Terminators, two squads of rubrics in rhinos, and a fearsome defiler. They came accompanied by a Pyroclastic Congregation of daemons, with six flamers of tzeentch, an exalted flamer, a herald of tzeentch atop a flaming chariot and the mysterious Changeling.

The Space Wolves, led by the great lord Brynjolf and Arjac Rockfist, had no need for such sorcerous subtlety. A great host of Thunderwolf cavalry accompanied by packs of smaller Fenrisian Wolves, three venerable dreadnoughts, and a hunting pack of Wulfen were backed up by the stalwart Wolf Guard terminators of Arjac's honor guard.

The sons of Russ wasted no time, hurling themselves towards the foe full-force. They offered little to no firepower the first turn, instead trusting in their storm shields to keep them safe as they attempted to close with the enemy.

The Thousand Sons responded by sending a screen of disposable cultists and flamers of tzeentch to guard the lives of their sorcerors. The combined fire of rubrics, psychic mind-bolts, and the defiler's weaponry took a devastating toll off of the Space Wolves predator, making it the first casualty of the battle.

The Wolves crashed into the defending units of the thousand sons with devastating force, with Arjac and all his shieldbrothers charging into the terminators of the scarab occult, thunderwolf riders charging and destroying the defiler, and the dreadnoughts and Wulfen following up behind, eager to join in the slaughter.

With a victory in a fair fight unlikely, the Thousand Sons resort to Tzeentchian trickery to attempt to win the day. The second unit of scarab occult appears far behind the enemy lines, gunning down the Fenrisian wolves who had been left to guard the Space Wolves' arcane storms. Ahriman and his cabal of rubrics swing around the main space wolves force to instead attack their commander directly, weaving a sinister Death Hex to remove the protection of his storm shield and dealing him a number of devastating wounds. Across the battlefield, in another attempt to behead the dogs of the false emperor, the Herald of Tzeentch and his screamer escort tear into Arjac Rockfist. They deal a number of wounds that would have felled a lesser lord, but Arjac is made of sterner stuff, and with three blows of his mighty hammer the Herald falls.

Despite their success thusfar, the Space Wolves still find themselves impeded by the daemons and mortal cultists that the Thousand Sons throw in front of their lines. The wolves are impeded by the battlefield terrain and the sheer mass of bodies that strain towards the fight, and though the Screamers and Cultists fall away, the rubrics, rhinos and sorcerors they defend still hold the warp portals open, while the space wolves' storm vortexes fall away one by one. Sensing the danger to his lord, the bike-mounted chaplain accompanying the Thunderwolf riders peels off, applying lifesaving salves to Lord Brynjolf and attempting to help him fight off the flamers of tzeentch attacking him.

Though the Flamers are driven to retreat, Brynjolf still falls to the sorcerous might of Ahriman, and a number of deadly warpflame bolts find their way through the chaplain's armor. With a single wound left, he seems all but certain to fall...

Mustering the last ounce of strength left in his body, the chaplain charges his bike straight into the teeth of the barrage of warpflame. His power armor sloughing away, bike engine choking, the venerable wolf priest spits one final oath of defiance as he aims his combi-melta directly at the sorceror's hated visage. Even as the final volley of fire cuts him down, Ahriman howls in pain and outrage as he is banished to the warp.

The hunting packs of the wulfen and thunderwolves sweep through the Thousand Sons' lines, closing two of the three dread warp portals. With just a moment more time afforded to them, they could have rounded upon the third, but with a final twist of fate, the Space Wolves carve through the last rhino transport standing between them and their goal and find themselves facing not another fiery warp portal, but instead a towering crimson daemon, vengeance glowing in his single eye...

(We roll a 1 for the game to continue on turn 5, with the last Warp Portal still open. The Thousand Sons, having destroyed two of the space wolves' objectives earlier in the battle, win by two points!

With only about 300 points comprised of a single unit of rubrics, a single unit of scarab occult, and two Flamers, the Thousand Sons definitely came off the worse for wear in the fighting, but I was able to use sacrificial units and a bottleneck in the terrain to delay the entire space wolves force for a couple of crucial turns to allow me to rack up a lead in victory points having my objectives all up with two of Tomas' objectives knocked down. If a couple of those dreadnoughts had stayed back on homeguard duty, the battle would probably have gone differently. As it was they didnt contribute too much to the battle because there were just so many space wolf bodies trying to get into melee.)
