5/22 Guard V Dark Eldar: Battle for the Panacea

Postby MrScotty » Tue May 01, 2018 7:19 am

Steven and I set up a custom narrative mission last Sunday, with 125PL of Imperial Guard and Adeptus Mechanicus clashing with sinister Drukhari of the Poisoned Tongue and the Cursed Blade.

The mission was a re-imagining of one of the classic fluff bits from the Dark Eldar codex: An STC for a near-miraculous medical device is discovered on a Forge World, and power hungry archon Lady Malys seeks to steal it away through deception. The artifact is seemingly unassailable, under the guard of a full titan legion, masses of imperial guard and skitarii, but Malys lures an entire ork space hulk into crashing into the planet's surface, diverting the bulk of the forces protecting the STC to respond to the new threat.

In the fluff, Malys steals the STC from an ork mekboy who had looted it, but our mission imagined if the rearguard of the adeptus mechanicus had been successful in fending off the orks, necessitating direct intervention by the Archon herself to obtain her prize.

The main objective was an indestructible Rhino which would travel down the center of the board. If it was controlled by the imperium at the end of any player turn it would move 3" towards the dark eldar deployment zone, and if it was controlled by the dark eldar, it would stop. Each player turn it spent stopped or moving would be worth 1 point to the respective player.

Additionally, the imperium player was searching for valuable data caches scattered throughout the battlefield, each one worth a point if the imperium player held it at the end of the game. The dark eldar were seeking worthy captives for the arenas of the dark city, and any multi-wound infantry unit destroyed in close combat by a Dark Eldar character would be worth a bonus point.

The Dark Eldar won first turn, advancing a swarm of reavers and hellions up the board and directing anti-tank fire to try and destroy the Hellhounds of the guard, succeeding in destroying one but only damaging the other.

The Guard responded by concentrating fire on the transports and the Hellions, ultimately destroying the hellions but finding their attempts to focus fire on one target thwarted by devious defensive stratagems. Bullgryns and Electropriests attack the Reaver bikes at the center of the board, killing 2.

Turn 2, the Reaver bikes flew away from the melee in the center to harass and engage the vehicles of the enemy while a large swarm of on-foot wyches and a succubus replace them in fighting the bullgryns and the priest. The succubus suceeds in killing the priest for the bonus point but a single bullgryn survives, leaving the whole wych horde engaged in melee.

30 tempestus commandos airdrop in behind the dark eldar lines, catching the entire force in a deadly pincer. They destroy a ravager, kill a squad of wyches, and leave a Raider with a single wound with a pair of Primes directing the surgical strike.

Enraged at having been tricked, Lady Malys' arrogance compels her to engage the enemy commander in close quarter combat with only the help of her trusted Sslyth and Lhamean retainers. Between a perfect shot from her blast pistol and masterful work with her huskblade, Malys succeeds in cutting the tank down, though she leaves her army and assistant Dracon to deal with the encroaching tempestus.

The Tempestus cut down additional Wych attackers, kill the Dracon and several Kabalite warriors, but find a deadly Succubus to be a difficult opponent to come to grips with. Elsewhere, the mighty anvil of the armored fist regiment contends with the vast numbers of the sprinting Drukhari, losing control of the STC transport to a massed swarm of wyches and covenite horrors in order to destroy the blaster-wielding Reaver bikes and Scourges attacking them.

The lone succubus fells both Tempestor Prime commanders before she is taken down, and little by little units of Kabalites respond to the scion pincer strike with their own firepower. What began as a one-sided masterstroke by the Tempestus became a bloody war of attrition on both sides. Another venerable leman russ tank and a Chimera falls to the relentless mass attack by the drukhari.

The Graian master fabricator flings himself into combat with the fleshcrafted horrors of the haemonculi, destroying two of the grotesques but sustaining wounds from a Talos pain engine. The entire tank line is engaged, and though the Tempestus is winning their battle against the drukhari Kabalite rearguard, the wyches have full control of the objective. The game ends in a Drukhari victory, with Malys claiming her prize to return to the Dark City of Commoragh for glory and acolades.

Dam, that sounds like a really good game. Have we ever run any larger campaigns involving more players? Maybe separate them by factions, winning territory and playing fluffy missions like this?

Yes. Have a look at the stuff about the Mirnovy saga that's been going on for the last two years in our archives.

We sure have. Typically, we spin up campaign stuff in the off-seasons, when we aren't seeing a big influx of new players, because when a new person shows up mid-campaign, all the people playing in the campaign aren't going to play them because they don't want to fall behind. so when we have a time period where people are coming consistently, but we aren't picking up tons of new players, we will sometimes go for longer-term campaigns.

I'd be game for a Thursday night campaign/league. I have no classes over the summer. Thursday we wouldn't be competing for tables with Sunday pickup games.

There are things in the works, stay tuned.

I can't really do Thursdays since that's the day I'm running an RPG game. But I would love to dedicate some time to a small campaign. In fact I'm running a small scenario this Sunday after being inspired by Scott's game right here
